Advertising!

Here is my Blog and my chance both to get things off my chest and to get others involved in the things I am interested in!
Today it's advertising. The amount of repetitive (to the point of driving me mad!) advertising for things that I do not want and never will, given how the endless ads have put me off. I do believe in advertising to inform, to find out if there is a match between you as a supplier and me with my customer wants or potential wants, but why is there so much repetition, again and again and again?
I watched the Tour de France, a nightly tv hour reviewing the day's racing. But every night there would be several breaks showing the same advertisements, driving me mad. How do we stop this madness? I register for a website and get loads and loads of advertisements until I deregister, in which case I miss the opportunty to hear about a new product or a new idea. Why do they not just send e-mails with news that I can decide is relevant to my needs or not? But just to push the same old products is a waste of everybody's time.
If you agree, let me know and let's start communicating with these advertisers; present us with the information but do not treat us like idiots and keep repeating the same message; it only debases the brand!

Hi Brian great to find you in the blogosphere, my advertising pet rant is children-focused advertising or adverts for loans aimed at compulsive debtors. I think we are veering away from it with the introduction of digital TV and prerecord tv though, which can only be a good thing for viewers. having said that i am not totally opposed to advertising - if i were, my business would not make any money!! I think it is VERY necessary for businesses to use certain advertising mediums to convey their messages - i hope they will use mine lots!!!

You are right, advertising to inform is fine, provided it is within acceptable limits. This rant is about endless repetitious adverts where the advertiser knows you will be seeing the same ad many times over. These are very annoying and, actually, put one off the product which is clearly not the objective, even if I am not the target market! I agree about children-focused ads and any ads that take advantage of people's weaknesses, but they will probably be the subject of another rant (I mean blog!)
